Venetian Glass, also known as Murano Glass, has a production history that spans over 1,500 years. This type of glass is made in Venice and its surrounding areas, originally on the tiny island of Murano. These exquisite “glass artworks” are renowned worldwide. Murano products are crafted on the island of Murano, which became the focal point of artistic glassmaking in the 13th century when the Italian Senate relocated most glassmaking factories from Venice to concentrate production there. All handcrafted items and vessels made using colorful glass and similar techniques are generally termed Venetian Glass.
What Do We Owe to the Masters of Murano?
Most of the defining features of Murano Glass were developed in the 13th century. On the island of Murano, glassmakers created “cristallo” in the 15th century, an almost transparent glass considered the best in the world. In the 16th century, Venetian artisans achieved considerable skill in infusing glass with colors and enhancing its transparency. They also developed various new decorative techniques that are known and applied to this day. They crafted white glass known as lattimo, which resembled porcelain. Italian glass masters had techniques that also allowed them to create surfaces mimicking fish scales or fine cracks. Moreover, they were pioneers in crafting colorful transparent glass as well as layered glass.
The traditional glassmaking gains from Murano almost fell into oblivion when Napoleonic forces invaded Venice in 1797 and destroyed most of the Murano glass factories. However, in 1860, Vincenzo Zanetti opened the Murano Glass Museum, where he revived memories of Murano styles and reminded people of the techniques of ancient masters. Later, Antonio Salviati established a company and resumed crafting glass using the noble, time-honored techniques of Murano artisans.
How is Venetian Glass Made?
Venetian Glass items are crafted through a variety of processes, one of the most notable being glass blowing, complemented by more detailed lampwork techniques, commonly known as lampworking. Murano Glass is entirely handmade by master artisans who have, for centuries, held a monopoly on high-quality glassmaking. These glassmakers successfully kept their production secrets for an extended period and were pioneers in creating and introducing various types of glass. They evolved or perfected techniques for crafting crystal glass, enameled glass (smalto), gold-streaked glass (aventurine), colorful glass (millefiori), milky glass (lattimo), and glass imitations of gems. Today, Murano artisans continue to employ age-old techniques to produce a wide range of products from artistic glass and glass jewelry to Murano chandeliers and wine stoppers.
