How to choose a perfect gift for someone to remember us by? How to say thank you for years of working together? An engraved inscription, quote, thanks or wishes will make each item a unique gift that will be remembered for years.
What is Engraving?
Engraving (from French to graver-engrave) is one of the oldest artistic techniques used to decorate objects. Originally, it consisted of carving various patterns and inscriptions in methyl, stone or glass with a hard tool. These grooves had different depths, cross-sections and shapes. The first known engraved vessels date back to 2000 BC and were found in Babylonia. In the past, engravers were employed in printing houses, in the production of stamps, in mints and artistic engraving workshops. Today, the engraving options are very diverse. In addition to the above-mentioned materials, you can engrave precious and semi-precious stones and metals, multi-layer and multi-colored glass or transparent plexiglass.

Engraving techniques
Currently, various engraving techniques are being used: manual, laser, or chemical engraving, engraving with a milling cutter and with the so-called jewelry diamond.
Manual tools, the so-called the engravers, are used for traditional engraving. They are variously shaped sharp tools made of steel with wooden handles. A set of such styluses allows to sculpt the surface using the cutting method which involves removing individual layers of material and turning it into shavings.
Laser engraving involves the use of a machine – a laser and special software. The technique includes either shallow (surface) or deep (0.05-0.5 mm) engraving. Deep laser engraving guarantees greater durability and resistance of the sign or inscription to mechanical damage. The color of the text is dark – graphite or even black depending on the material used. Engraving made using this technique is very esthetic and durable.
Chemical engraving or etching consists of dissolving the unprotected surface of the metal by immersing it in an acid solution. Elements that are not exposed to acid are protected with special acid resistant substance. Everything that is not covered in it is etched. This technique is often used in metalwork or armoring to decorate large surfaces.
Engraving with a milling cutter allows you to obtain the greatest depth of engraving, and even to cut the material. This technique allows for multi-level, concave, and convex engraving, which is of great importance in the implementation of three-dimensional (3D) projects. It also does not change the color of the material as is the case with laser engraving which, in turn, allows for coloring the surface, e.g. with paint or patina. The technique is best suited for engraving on metals, plastics, and wood.
Engraving using the so-called jewelry diamond is the closest to a hand-made engraving. The depth of the engraving depends on the material used and can vary. They are usually used to decorate jewelry and exclusive utility items often made of precious materials, e.g. cutlery, cuffs and tie clips, fountain pens or watches. This technique works great on uneven surfaces.
